The most important of these is the news that California is likely to legalize and regulate online poker very early in the New Year. The other reason for optimism is, perversely, due to the terrible economic conditions the US finds itself in and the need to raise money to help people get out of this situation. It seems logical that any tax on entertainment where people are willing to pay billions a year to be able to play their favorite games would be a good place to start. It would be easy money for the government.

Finally, the other reason is to protect people in the US. That is, it is much better to have something like gambling regulated so that all involved are protected from the few unscrupulous operators that might want a piece of the action. By giving government licenses to only those casinos that pass a very strict set of operating procedures, all players can be safe of a fair game.

This has already been done in the UK and the public are very happy to play games in casinos regulated by the UK government and often, by companies listed on the London stock exchange (an extra layer of regulation)
