Despite being one of the oldest slot themes we know of, ancient Egypt continues to remain popular. There’s just something inherently magical about the land of pharaohs and pyramids that draws people in. We don’t blame you if you’re a bit fatigued on them all, but personally, we’re loving every single one! So when Pragmatic Play announced they’ll be making a game using this theme, we were super excited. Have they succeeded in creating something great, or is it just a flop?

Gameplay

We’re a bit mixed on the animations. We like their presence, and some of them do look quite cool. Others are just alright, and that’s mostly owed to their symbol design. See, you can make a cool animations for winged cats and pharaohs. But for playing card royals, all you can do is make them wiggle about a little. The end result is a release that could look great, but doesn’t due to minor mistakes that snowballed into larger problems. Such as the decision to make the background image barely visible!

You play Egyptian Fortunes on a 5x3 board with 20 paylines, which pay left to right only. There are two special features to keep track of: free spins and Energy spins. Energy spins is just the fancy way to say re-spins. You earn re-spins by winning specific winning combinations, and they seem to act as a ‘consolation prize’. Meanwhile, you get six free spins with no way of retriggering it. During extra turns, only three randomly chosen icons and Wilds are present on the playing field.

Setting your total bet is a relatively simple affair in any Pragmatic Play slot. There are two ways to do this. First way is to tap the plus and minus buttons next to the Spin until you reach your ideal wager. Option two is adjusting your coin value and coins per payline, which gives you more precise control of your stake. No matter which method you use, you can bet between GBP 0.20 and GBP 100.00 on each spin. This is a great betting spread for both casual players and high rollers.

This game has a medium variance, which offers a good balance of frequent wins and satisfying jackpots. At the very least, that’s the idea. Unfortunately, this release doesn’t quite pull it off, thanks to how its special feature is structured. It caps your maximum prize at 309x your total stake, which is criminally low for medium volatility. This is the sort of jackpot we’d expect for a low variance slot! Egyptian Fortunes has an RTP of 96.50%, which is half a percentage point above the current industry average.

Bonus Rounds

Certain winning combinations, like four-of-a-kind A or three-of-a-kind Pharaoh, award several Energy Spins. Said spins are played immediately, and do not cost a dime. You technically could win additional Energy spins while they’re already active, and keep this going indefinitely. All wins from this re-spin bonus are accumulated, and awarded as one big prize when the spinning finishes.

Find three Scatters in the first, third and fifth reel to win six free spins. Before the special feature starts, three symbols are randomly chosen from the paytable. It can be any icon except for Wilds and Scatters. Scatters do not appear at all during free spins, but Wilds can appear on reels two and four.

Summary

This slot has so much potential for greatness! The two special features are quite exciting, and would easily find themselves in our favourites list. And yet, that’s not the case because of awful design by Pragmatic Play. Either increase the pays of all symbols, or allow free spins to be retriggered. As it stands, the jackpot is simply not worth the effort.
