We’re sure everyone has stories of a release they loved playing, but just stopped for one reason or another. So when the time came to try out Irish Charms, we were quite curious to see how our modern sensibilities would handle it. Is it good enough to compete with the awesome slots of today? Gameplay

Good lord almighty, that’s a lot of green! All the stereotypically Irish things can be found both on the board and in the background image. The picture they use is just a whole heap of four leaf clovers overlaid on top of a dark green colour. It actually looks quite stylish, probably because the colour isn’t overused in every other release. And while the symbols themselves look a little bit dated, the actual designs are top notch. Really, the only downside to Irish Charms is that it doesn’t have great animations. Though, that might be asking too much, given its age!

You play this slot on a 3x3 board with 3 flexible paylines, which pay left to right only. And since paylines are flexible, you can turn them on or off to adjust your total bet. This is something we rarely see in Pragmatic Play’s games. In the vast majority of them, you aren’t allowed to touch the number of active paylines! But the developer has committed hard to ensuring the experience of a classic release stays intact. So much so that Irish Charms offers you only one special feature: and that’s Wild icons. If you enjoy no or few bonuses, this will suit you just fine. But for us, this was almost a deal-breaker!

One thing we always liked about Pragmatic Play was the awesome user interface they had. But it seems, in an effort to provide a genuine experience, even that has disappeared! Instead, there’s a large silver bar which very obviously stands out. Apart from that, the functionality is still the same, if not even better. You can change your coin value, bet per payline and the number of currently active paylines! This allows for a wider range of bets. You can stake between GBP 0.01 and GBP 15.00 on each spin, which seems like a fair betting spread for only three paylines.

The slot does have a really good jackpot, however: worth 3000x your total bet! If you want to take that kind of prize home, however, you should prepare for a grind. In most other circumstances, the game is low variance. But it jealously guards its top prize behind a full screen win of lucky seven Wilds! Scoring even just one line win of nothing but Wilds is challenging. Filling the screen entirely? That’ll take a blessing from a real life leprechaun! Fortunately, the RTP is better than average, which helps your odds slightly. It’s 96.96%, almost a whole percentage point above the current 96% industry average.

Bonus Rounds

But hands down the worst part of this release is the special features. Having no or only one bonus can be good if done well. Pragmatic Play should know: they have a whole heap of slots with just one special feature, and they’re super fun! Why they decided to have only Wilds in Irish Charms is beyond us. Even classic games had bonuses, even if they were super rudimentary. As things stand right now, all you can do is cross your fingers and hope you land the jackpot. You’ll receive no helping hand from an awesome special feature.

Summary

Ultimately, this release failed to excite us. We’re sure fans of classic slots will love it. But it brings nothing new to the table; nothing we can’t get somewhere else. Irish Charms is a slot distilled to its very core elements. With no bonuses and somewhat dated graphics, we’re not too keen on recommending it to most players.
