They were guardians that only the worthy could pass by, hence why that large statue of one was erected to watch over the pyramids of pharaohs.

But the statue’s impressive visage has outstripped its legacy, and so the image of the sphinx has lost that dangerous tone – enough to even be thrown into a slot. The visuals are decent, though they’re nothing to write home about. We like the backdrop of pyramids and palm trees, which contrast nicely against the solid royal purple background of the reels. Each reel is separately animated, and there’s a decent variety of symbols to play with.

You can find some boring ones, like letters and numbers – A, K, Q, J and 10, as well as some unique and interesting ones, like Anubis, the Eye of Horus, a Phoenix and some jewellery. The Sphinx represents the Wild, which is two rows tall, and the Scatter is represented by the pyramid.

As we already mentioned, the Sphinx can expand to cover an entire reel when it is part of a winning combination. Not only that, but it will also transform surrounding symbols into more Wilds, giving you a greater chance of getting those big Wild wins. As a result, Wilds can be a somewhat rare catch in this title.

As for free spins, you have several choices depending on how many Scatters triggered a feature. With all options, you will get four different choices which offer a different mix of free spins and multipliers. The more free spins you get, the more the multiplier shrinks. Furthermore, even if you activate the bonus with five Scatters, you only need three while the feature is active to re-trigger it once more. With reactivations, you could win up to a whopping 600 free spins, at which point IGT imposes a hard cap so your luck doesn’t make them bankrupt!

The choice between different mixtures of multipliers and free spins aren’t new to IGT, but that kind of player choice is hard to find. We found Wilds much rarer than they usually are in their games, but we attribute this a little bit to bad luck, and a bit of intentional tampering to ensure that the Wild’s feature isn’t being activated too often.
