Innovation can be tough to come by in the iGaming industry. It’s not for a lack of will: but trying something new can usually be a big risk. And with so many software providers releasing new slots every month, stumbling even once is usually not an option for smaller developers. So seeing IGT choose to try it anyways pleased us quite a bit! So, has their piggy smashing gamble paid off?
Visually, it’s quite simple. And yet, there’s some kind of odd charm to it that we can’t quite put our finger on. On all counts, it shouldn’t be that great. The background image is as basic it gets: green field, blue skies and a few clouds. But it’s the small things that make it stand out. How the Sun shines behind the reels, or how everything near the Sun is slightly more yellow! Not to mention the fun animations. Well, fun if you enjoy cartoony violence towards animals. If you don’t, then we don’t know what to tell you. It -is- called Smash the Piggy.
Gameplay was what really won us over, however. At first glance, it’s quite standard. There’s a 5x3 board with 20 fixed paylines, which pay left to right only. There are also two special features, both of them requiring you to chase after cute piggies! The first can grant you a random award which consists of multipliers, second picks, triggering the other special feature… or all of the above! The second bonus has you smashing pigs for multipliers and cash prizes, until your meter runs out.
You know, we didn’t expect IGT to go all the way and make a new layout for this game. It’s not radically different from what you’re used to, don’t worry. But one of the biggest advantages of this new system is streamlining your total bets. There’s no way to tamper with the number of available paylines, so all you can do is directly change your total bet. You can stake between GBP 0.20 and GBP 400 on each spin, which is an awesome betting spread for casual players and high rollers alike.
We doubt anyone will be able to score the best possible cash prize without help of the special features. But there’s always a theoretical chance you could walk away with a 10,000 coin jackpot without them! All you have to do is score a five-of-a-kind win of the most valuable and rare symbol available in IGT’s release. Easy, right? At the very least, we have access to the RTP information, which sits between 92.15% and 96.17%. It’s not as bad as some other slots we have played, but it still puts Smash the Pig beneath the 96% average.
Find three to five Scattered pig icons to win one of four awards:
• Random multiplier between 1x and 20x the total bet
• Random multiplier between 1x and 15x the total bet and another pick chance
• Trigger the Pig Smashing special feature
• All available prizes
Meanwhile, collecting three, four of five Bonus symbols activates the Pig Smashing special feature. Each bonus icon also adds more luck to the Luck Meter. Each time a pig is chosen, a multiplier between 1x to 20x is awarded to the player. Each time a pig is smashed, some luck from the meter runs out. If you still have some luck left after all pigs are smashed, the remaining pigs run away.
This has been a really fun game, we have to admit! IGT’s attempt at trying something new has been a resounding success, and we couldn’t be happier. We’re hoping this emboldens the developer to take more risks. Here’s hoping their next release is just as amazing as Smash the Pig was!
